Illustrators: Creative Nonfiction?

The quarterly magazine Creative Nonfiction is seeking an Australia-based
artist to illustrate our upcoming fall 2012 issue, Creative Nonfiction
#46, and we hope you’ll encourage your blog readers, or anyone else who
might be interested, to apply.

We’ll consider various types of media — line drawings, collage,
watercolors, etc. — and welcome all styles of interpretation well suited
to a print format. The chosen artist will work closely with our editorial
and design staff to create 8 to 10 original designs that will be featured
on the cover and interior of the magazine.

Creative Nonfiction has an international circulation of 7,000, so this is
a great opportunity for an Australian artist (student or professional) to
have their work seen by a large audience. The chosen artist will also be
profiled for at least three months on CNF’s website, which attracts nearly
13,000 visitors per month, and this issue will be launched at the 2012
Melbourne Writers Festival.

Interested artists should upload a resume and three low-resolution jpeg
samples of their best work no later than 11:59 PM (GMT) on March 16, 2012.
A link to an electronic portfolio is also preferred.

Queensland artist: Ryan Byrne

Now that I'm living in Hervey Bay, I thought I'd give a mention to a local artist.

Ryan Byrne paints local scenes, locally:

I've been on that pier/jetty!

Ryan also has several YouTube videos of his paintings in progress, which are popular.

He has exhibited several times locally, in Hervey Bay.

Queensland artist: Chris Postle

Coolum artist Chris Postle has exhibited from Cairns to Brisbane, & taught workshops from Chinchilla to Noosa.



I dreamt I was watching Chris painting a few nights ago, must have been a reminder to finish this post?

Queensland artist: Donald James Waters

Donald James Waters lives at Jacobs Well, on the northern end of the Gold Coast.

Nigerian artist: Ifeyinwa Umeike (aka Ify Ojo)

Ifeyinwa Umeike is an Igbo economics graduate, with no formal art training, who paints in gouache and Nigerian fabric cutouts:

"A Red Canoe" is my favourite: - I love the stark clarity of it, due to the white lines/outlines, & the colour combination.

Born in Toowoomba, Kendall travels internationally, exhibiting & painting on location, live!

I think Susanna Bertolacci lives on the Gold Coast of Queensland?

Queensland artist: Megan Lane

Megan Lane is a visual artist living in Mackay, Queensland:

These are two of my favourites of her paintings. I especially like the one on the right. I wonder who it is? I love her face.

Molas: folk art of the Cuna/Kuna (Tule) Indians (South America)

Molas are the folk art of the Cunan Indian women, in South America. Vividly colored panels are used to adorn blouses and are made from pieces of multicoloured material, cut and sewn into narrative and fantasy scenes:

Textile Artist, Yinka Shonibare

Yinka Shonibare MBE, contemporary artist, has transformed paintings (from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London) into (Dutch wax African print) fabrics. See more & learn more here.

Nail art

Just for fun: here are my birthday nails:



These were hand painted, using a wooden toothpick with a blunted tip.

A layering technique from Gary Reef

I love the effect of this layering technique from Gary Reef:


I notice though that he just knows which colours to choose to spray, & how & where, to achieve the desired effect.

I was surprised at a couple of the comments on this video: imo this layering technique improved the look of the painting.
